Smoke & Stone.

A house wrapped in smoked oak and cut through with pale travertine, where old paintings hang against the dark.

Living room with a smoked oak ceiling and fireplace wall, a dark marble coffee table, a brown velvet sofa and a view through to the travertine kitchen

The brief

A considered
point of view.

A house built on one contrast: near-black smoked oak against pale travertine. The oak runs across walls and ceilings in rough-sawn boards, so the rooms feel held and quiet, and the stone is carved into it wherever light is needed: a long hearth under the fire, a glowing niche in the kitchen wall, a monolithic island, the legs of the dining table. Classical paintings in worn gilt frames, a marble bust, old brass and bronze sit directly on the dark wood, with cognac leather as the only colour. The bedroom keeps the same dark wall, then opens through a narrow bronze-framed door into a bathroom of travertine, brushed steel and glossy dark tiles.
